Study English and Work Programs

Study and Work Programs offer an excellent opportunity to study English and gain valuable work experience in Canada. There are 3 options available: Internship (paid/unpaid), Farmstay/Ranchstay and Volunteer work. All three types of programs consist of two components: studying at inlingua Vancouver first and then participating in the placement. We will help you find a rewarding work experience where you will have the opportunity to speak English with Canadians in a real environment.

Internship — unpaid or paid professional work for professional executives or university students at Canadian companies in an area of related experience or study English. This program may also be used to gain more experience in an area in which they would like to gain more experience. inlingua Vancouver offers this program in partnership with WISH Vancouver.

Volunteer — unpaid work for non-profit organizations or special events in which the student helps with any task that is required.

Farm Stay — unpaid work at a Canadian farm helping the farmers in their daily work (cattle, crops, etc) or with the household chores.

Internship Program

The internship program at inlingua Vancouver (offered in partnership with WISH Vancouver) is an exciting opportunity for you to apply your classroom knowledge to a practical work environment. Students gain valuable work experience in their chosen field as well as an opportunity to practice English and learn about Canadian business culture.

This program requires a minimum of two months of English lessons at inlingua Vancouver with our conversational method and our Business English Program. To ensure successful placements, we try to find the best match for both the student and the employer. To do this, we evaluate the student's skills, training, experience, and personal interests before the placement. This ensures the highest level of satisfaction for the student.

What kind of job can I do?

Unpaid internships are available at over 400 Canadian companies. You will have the opportunity to speak English with Canadians. Through WISH Vancouver, we also offer paid internships in three job fields: business administration, hospitality and information technology.

Here are the types of companies and positions we frequently place students in:

  • Marketing and Market Research
  • Office Administration and Reception
  • Non Profit and Human Rights Organizations
  • Customer Service and Retail Stores
  • International Trade Organizations
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Hotels and Hospitality
  • Financial Services

Other types of positions may also be available, depending on market conditions and the experience of the student. Some of these positions do not require previous training or experience.

Requirements for Internship Program (Unpaid)

Students interested in the Internship Program (Unpaid) must pay special attention to the following requirements:

  • Students are required to have at least some work experience, or educational background in the job field they request.
  • Students must obtain a C30 Work/Study Permit.
  • Minimum enrolment is (2 months study/ 2 months work,) Maximum enrolment (6 months study / 6 months work).
  • Must have completed inlingua level 3B or higher.
  • Students must enrol in the Full-Time Bus. English Program for 2 months.

Internship Placement Fees are: $ 1,200 CAD (Unpaid /Paid Internships).

Requirements for Internship Program (Paid)

Students interested in the Internship Program (Paid) must pay special attention to the following requirements:

  • Students need to have at least one year experience in business administration, hospitality or information technology.
  • Students must obtain a C30 Work/Study Permit which is a 50/50 work and study permit. inlingua Vancouver can assist the student with regard to processing the permit application.
  • Students must enrol in the Full-Time Bus. English Program for 2 months.
  • Students must have completed inlingua level 3B or higher.
  • Minimum enrolment for the 3 PAID job fields are as follows: Bus. Admin (6 months study + 6 months work), Hospitality (3 months study + 3 months work), Information Technology (3 months study + 3 months work).

Students can not work part-time while they study. The internship component will follow the study component. Maximum hours per week is 40, and minimum is 30 hours per week. Students may request to work less than 30 hours.

Additional benefits from participating in the Internship program

All students who join the program will get the opportunity to develop their career skills before the job placement. Workshops will teach students a variety of employment related skills such as:

  • Resume writing
  • Canadian business culture
  • Job interview skills
  • How to succeed in the work place

Volunteer Program

Volunteering is a great way to contribute to the local community and gain hands-on experience.

This program requires minimum a month of lessons at inlingua Vancouver with our exclusive conversational method. You will have the opportunity to be involved in community projects, spend time with Canadians and put your English skills into practice.

Various types of projects include sports events, cultural events, hospitals, campaigns, associations, non profit organizations, non government organizations, environment protection groups and much more.

Requirements for a the Volunteer Program

  • Registration at inlingua for at least 1 month in any program.
  • Minimum age: 18 years old.
  • Must have completed inlingua level 2A (intermediate) or higher.
  • Apply at least 4 weeks in advance.
  • Provide clear information about the objectives and goals to be obtained through volunteering.
  • Participants can come to Canada under a Tourist visa (visitors) or a Student Visa (study permit).

Volunteer experience is not considered work as long as it makes integral part of an Academic Program. In Canada it is illegal for students or tourists to work without a work visa. For all immigration purposes, Internship is not considered work but a component of a Language Program.

Students receive a Certificate and a Letter of Recommendation after finishing their Volunteer Program.

FarmStay/Ranchstay Program

Farmstay and ranchstay programs can provide you with a friendly and comfortable environment where you can learn more about Canadian culture and the English language. You will have the opportunity to make new friendships by living and working on a Canadian farm in British Columbia. The program includes accommodation.

This program requires minimum a month of lessons at inlingua Vancouver with our exclusive conversational method, in addition to the actual Farmstay/Ranchstay program. This program takes place in British Colombia, from the majestic Rocky Mountains to Vancouver Island.

Participants must be willing to collaborate a maximum of 5 hours per day, 5 days per week. Often visitors extend their work time to enjoy different farm activities. Host families provide a room and food and a welcoming environment to participants.

Requirements for a the Farmstay/Ranchstay Program

  • Participants can come to Canada under a Tourist visa (visitors) or a Student Visa (study permit).

In Canada it is illegal for students or tourists to work. A Farm Stay is not considered work as long as it makes integral part of an Academic Program.
