Internship Program (Unpaid)

The internship program (unpaid) at inlingua Vancouver is an exciting opportunity for you to apply your classroom knowledge to a practical work environment. Students gain valuable work experience in their chosen field as well as an opportunity to practice English and learn about Canadian business culture.

This program is offered in partnership with multiple internship companies such as "Vancouver Internships.ca" and "Wish Canada".

This program requires a minimum of two months of English lessons at inlingua Vancouver with our conversational method and our Business English Program. To ensure successful placements, we try to find the best match for both the student and the employer. To do this, we evaluate the student's skills, training, experience, and personal interests before the placement. This ensures the highest level of satisfaction for the student.

•  Distinguished reference letter from your employer to add to your C.V.
•  Further develop your English skills or gain more experience in a wide variety of industries.
•  Recommended for university students and graduates who speak English as their 2nd language.

Unpaid internships are available at hundres of Canadian companies of all sizes. You will have the opportunity to speak English with Canadians.

Requirements for Internship Program (Unpaid)

All Students interested in the Internship Program (Unpaid) must pay special attention to the following requirements:

1. Study in a Full-Time Program (IP1-Intensive / SE-Super Intensive / APP-Accelereated Professional Program)
2. Enter your internship placement having completed level 4B (Advanced) or higher
3. Take at minimum of 2 month of inlingua’s Full-Time Business English Program as part of your studies
4. Hold a Valid Study Permit + C30 Work Exemption Permit, or a Working Holiday Visa: Before coming to Canada, students must apply for a study permit in their countries. For the work permit, students can apply in their countries or in Canada, if they decide to join the internship program after they are in Canada, but must have a valid study permit.
5. Be over 19 years old and have a minimum of 1 year of post secondary education (ie. University, College, Apprenticeship or Technical institution). 

Study Permit and Work Permit: inlingua Vancouver can assist the student with regard to processing both the study and work permit applications to the embassy of Canada in your country, or if you are already in Canada and have a valid study permit, we can help you process your work permit application in Canada. Internship Program (Paid)

The internship program (paid) at inlingua Vancouver is an exciting opportunity for you to apply your classroom knowledge and previous work experience to a practical work environment in a Canadian company. Students gain valuable work experience in one of 3 possible fields as well as an opportunity to practice English and learn about Canadian business culture.

This program is offered in partnership with multiple internship companies such as "Vancouver Internships.ca" and "Wish Canada".

For the Paid Internship Program, only 3 job fields are possible:

1. Hospitality Management (6 months of Study + 6 months of Work minimum): High operations positions, front desk, night auditor, food services and events.Placements in Whistler, Rockies, Vancouver, Toronto, Niagara region.
2. Information Technology (6 months of Study + 6 months of Work minimum): Web design, database administration, network administration, software, programming and quality assurance. Placements in Vancouver and Toronto.
3. Office Administration (6 months of Study + 6 months of Work minimum): Junior level office administration positions with a job shadowing component added on. Approx. 1/4 of the internship day is spent job shadowing. Students can observe marketing, finance, or other departments and quality assurance. Placements in Vancouver and Toronto.

Compensation during the internship (paid): There will be a stipend of $ 200 per week approximately. This amount might vary according to the company and the position.

Requirements for Internship Program (paid)

Students interested in the Internship Program (Paid) must pay special attention to the following requirements:

1. Study in a Full-Time Program (IP1-Intensive or SE-Super Intensive).
2. Enter your internship placement having completed level 4B (Advanced) or higher.
3. Take at minimum of 2 month of inlingua’s Full-Time Business English Program as part of your studies.

University, College, Apprenticeship or Technical institution) and have a minimum of 1 year of previous relevant work experience in one of the 3 job fields (Hospitality Management, Information Technology or Business Administration), or...
6. ...Be over 19 years old and have a minimum of 2 years of post secondary education (ie. University, College, Apprenticeship or Technical institution) in the fields of Hospitality Management, Information Technology or Business Administration.
7. Suitable for students with advanced level English skills.
8. Minimum enrolment at inlingua for a total 48 weeks: 6 months study (24 weeks) + 6 months work (24 weeks), for a total of one year (48 weeks).
9. Distinguished reference letter from previous or current employer.

Study Permit and Work Permit: inlingua Vancouver can assist the student with regard to processing both the study and work permit applications to the embassy of Canada in your country, or if you are already in Canada and have a valid study permit, we can help you process your work permit application in Canada. If you have a working holiday visa, you don't need any additional documents. If you have a visitor visa you can not take this program.

Co-Op Program (paid)

• Paid placements in non-professional level jobs.
• Ideal for young travelers wishing to experience life in Canada.
• Students must not have high expectations for this job placement and be very flexible to accommodate to any job openings. 
• It is recommended to take the English Co-Op program for 8 months: 4 months of Study + 4 months of Work, or 12 months: 6 months of Study + 6 months of Work.
• Students have the option to take General English or Business English for their English course, before the Co-Op program.
• The non-professional work experience (Co-op) is about physical work and the chores and responsibilities will not have any relation with the student's educational background or professional experience. In exchange for his/her physical work, the student will receive an economic compensation. The work itself is not very interesting but rather repetitive, heavy and physical like for examples in hotels, stores, restaurants, tourist attractions, etc.
• Even though it is not professional, students will also be able to speak English with their workmates or clients and put into practice their English course knowledge.
• The labour is compensated with minimum wages and up (around  $ 8 per hour before taxes), depending on the type of work and other variables.
• Hours of work per week: Minimum is 22.5 hours per week and up to 40 hour per week, corresponding with the hours in the English course (IP1 22.5 hours per week, SE 30 hours per week)

 This program is offered in partnership with multiple Co-Op companies such as "Vancouver Internships.ca" and "Wish Canada".

 

Available Co-Op Job Areas

Supermarkets, Hotels, Restaurants, Cafes, Resorts, Shops, Dept. Stores.

Your exact position in each job area will depend on the season, your English level, previous experience and availability. You need to be flexible!

Placements available in: Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Whistler, the Rockies, Niagara Region, and Toronto. Accommodation is at times provided by some hotels, but not guaranteed.

 

 Co-Op Requirements

1. Take the online test at www.inlinguavancouver.com and qualify at level 2A to enter inlingua.
2. Hold a Valid Student Permit + C30 Work Exemption Permit, or a Working Holiday Visa.
3. Must be at least 19 years of age.
4. Must be able to work between 22.5 to 40 hours per week.
5. Minimum duration is 4 months of study and 4 months of work, for a total of 8 months.
6. Maximum duration is 6 (six) months of study and 6 (six) months of work, for a total of 12 months.
7. Required level of English: Completion of level 3A (Upper Intermediate) at the moment of starting the internship
8. Students need to be flexible about the position, city of employment and hours of work.

Co-Op Placement Fees are: $ 1,200 CAD

Important Information common to Internship and Co-Op Programs

• The complete program English Internship / Co-Op Program is composed of a specific number of hours of academic study consisting of language acquisition and specific business skills: presentations, telephoning, meetings, negotiations, socializing across cultures, business correspondence, marketing, finance, industry basics terminology and practices, mandatory assignments and projects throughout the program, and maximum the same number of hours of an paid / unpaid internship / Co-Op, which is an essential and integral component of the program.
• The student must complete the hours of internship / Co-Op in British Columbia during the program. Therefore, the student needs to apply for a study permit with a work authorization – with a C30 - Exemption – valid for the duration of the program. 
• The internship / Co-Op portion of the program is a monitored work experience (through weekly reports, contact assignments, performance evaluations final reports & presentations), related to an academic field of study and meeting specific learning goals (including language acquisition, conflict resolution, cultural competence, problem solving, teamwork, handling criticism, adaptability, motivation, leadership skills, industry specific terminology and practices). 
• The professional internship program / Co-Op will be managed by professional staff at inlingua Vancouver and our internship / Co-Op coordinators. All internships / Co-Ops are performed under supervision, reports will be submitted by both student and the host company and under no circumstances may the internship / Co-Op component of the English Internship / Co-Op Program be greater than the period of full-time in-class studies. 
• HRDSC Confirmation Exemption C30 applies to foreign students who have been accepted in these types of work and study programs. Therefore students are entitled to apply for a Work Permit under this exemption and will not have to submit an Employment Confirmation (formerly termed “Employment Validation”) as part of the application for the Work Permit. The application for a Work Permit issued under this exemption is fee exempt.
• The English level will be assessed before starting the Internship and if the English level is not sufficiently high enough at the time to begin the Internship, the student will be required to attend additional English classes at his/her own expense before starting the Internship.
• The internship offers multiple opportunities to link classroom learning to workplace experience. In addition, the intern’s work should make a useful contribution to the sponsoring organization and include a variety of tasks to maximize the scope of the intern’s work place experience.
• Upon successful completion of the academic and practical components, students will receive a Certificate from inlingua Vancouver and a letter of recommendation from the host organization.

FarmStay / Ranchstay Program

Farmstay and ranchstay programs can provide you with a friendly and comfortable environment where you can learn more about Canadian culture and the English language. You will have the opportunity to make new friendships by living and working on a Canadian farm in British Columbia. The program includes accommodation and all meals.

This program requires minimum one month of lessons at inlingua Vancouver with our exclusive conversational method, in addition to the actual Farmstay/Ranchstay program. This program takes place in British Colombia, from the majestic Rocky Mountains to Vancouver Island.

Participants must be willing to collaborate a maximum of 5 hours per day, 5 days per week. Often visitors extend their work time to enjoy different farm activities. Host families provide a room and food and a welcoming environment to participants. There is usually one student per farm / ranch. Flexibility is requiered from participants as each farm / ranch offers different posibbilities and the time of the year also determines the type of work.

Because the Winter can be very cold, the program runs in Spring, Summer and Fall. Winter placements are not recommended.

Requirements for the Farmstay / Ranchstay Program

1. Registration at inlingua for at least 1 month in any program of study plus 1 month of Farmstay / Ranchstay
2. The duration of the Study component can be longer than the duration of the Farmstay / Ranchstay component, but not the opposite.
3. Minimum age: 18 years old.
4. Must have completed inlingua level 2A (intermediate) or higher.
5. Apply at least 6 weeks in advance.
6. Provide clear information about the objectives and goals to be obtained through the Farmstay / Ranchstay
7. Participants can come to Canada under a Tourist visa (visitors) or a Student Visa (study permit).
8. For all immigration purposes, Farm Stay is not considered work but a component of a Language Program.

Students can not work part-time while they study. The work component will follow the study component.
